3. Different experience reveals different things
Put three experienced professionals around the same piece of work and they may notice three quite different problems.
A business analyst may immediately notice a handover where information is regularly lost. An architect may see that two systems use the same status label to mean different things. An operations manager may recognise the informal intervention that experienced staff use to keep difficult cases moving.
All three can be correct.
Their professional histories have taught them to pay attention to different features of the same operation. That difference is useful evidence rather than something that needs to be eliminated.

Business-Systems Engineering therefore begins with investigation rather than with a predetermined modelling technique. The engineer observes people, information, decisions, technology, work Items and customer effects. The purpose is to understand the operational Business-System before deciding what should change.
Now, we aim to integrate overlapping areas of attention around one claim rather than develop three disconnected pictures. The analyst, architect and operations manager are all examining the same reality. Their perspectives overlap, but they are not identical. The sum is so much more than the parts.
Business-Systems Engineering does not ask professionals to abandon the expertise that makes them notice different things. It asks them to bring that expertise into a common engineering conversation.
Changing perspective changes what becomes visible. If we look through a software lens, we tend to improve software. If we look through a process lens, we tend to improve process. When those observations are connected within the wider Business-System, they can reveal problems and opportunities that none of the individual views exposes by itself.
Our reflective question is therefore intentionally simple:
What can you see from where you stand?
The next question is just as important:
What can we all see when those observations are brought together?
